Overview

Overweight and obesity, as well as periodontitis, are common public health problems with increasing prevalence. Both conditions may be linked through shared mechanisms involving chronic low-grade systemic inflammation. Numerous studies have reported an association between elevated body mass index (BMI) and periodontitis, particularly among younger and working-age populations. However, data regarding Thai adults under the age of 60 remain limited. Therefore, this study aims to determine the prevalence of high BMI and periodontitis among Thai adults aged 18-59 years and to identify factors associated with these conditions. The findings may provide useful information for improving awareness and supporting the prevention of both periodontal and general health problems in this population.

Description

This cross-sectional study will be conducted among Thai adults aged 18-59 years attending the Dental Hospital, Faculty of Dentistry, Mahidol University (Phayathai Campus). Eligible participants will undergo anthropometric and periodontal assessments and complete an interviewer-administered questionnaire.

Anthropometric assessment will include body weight, height, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference. BMI will be classified according to the Western Pacific Region (WPRO) criteria. Periodontal examination will include probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), bleeding on probing (BOP), gingival index (GI), and plaque score. Periodontal status will be classified as clinical gingival health/gingivitis or periodontitis according to the 2017 AAP/EFP classification.

Information on sociodemographic characteristics, medical conditions, smoking, alcohol consumption, sleep duration, and other health-related factors will also be collected. The study will examine the prevalence of high BMI and periodontitis and explore factors associated with these conditions in this population.
