Overview

This observational, multicentric prospective study aims to understand the prevalence and burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in people with chronic lung diseases (CLD) across the globe, understanding also geographical variability and the risk factors for acquiring AMR.

The primary objective is to understand the prevalence and burden of AMR in CLD both at a local and gloval level.

Secondary objectives include: 1) understanding susceptibilities models of high priority pathogens in people with CLD; 2) understanding geographic variability in the prevalence of AMR in CLD; 3) analysing risk factors for AMR in CLD Participants will be recruited

Description

This is an observational prospective, non-pharmacological, multicentre, international, non-profit study. Data will be collected at all participating centres during two separate two-week periods every year over the course of five consecutive years. Patients with underlying chronic lung diseases in an inpatient or outpatient setting with at least one respiratory sample collected over the prior 12 months will be included. The diagnostic criteria will follow standard clinical procedures. The data will be pseudonymized before being entered into the electronic case report form (eCRF) prepared with RedCap. After signing the informed consent, clinical, demographic, and microbiological variables will be collected. To facilitate the collection of some demographic and clinical variables, a questionnaire will be administered at recruitment.

All procedures whose data will be collected for this protocol fall within normal clinical practice and are in accordance with the standard operating procedures in place at the centre. No procedures, diagnostic tests, or interventions outside the usual clinical practice will be performed for this protocol.

Eligibility

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Patients of all ages with any chronic lung disease who, for clinical practice, underwent testingof at least one respiratory biological sample (sputum culture; bronchoaspirate; bronchoalveolar lavage; nasal swab; throat swab) within the 12 months prior to the visit.
  • Patients attending an outpatient clinic or hospitalized during the study period

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Patients who have not signed the informed consent form
  • Absence of data in the patient record

FAQs

Learn more about clinical trials

What is a clinical trial?

A clinical trial is a study designed to test specific interventions or treatments' effectiveness and safety, paving the way for new, innovative healthcare solutions.

Why should I take part in a clinical trial?

Participating in a clinical trial provides early access to potentially effective treatments and directly contributes to the healthcare advancements that benefit us all.

How long does a clinical trial take place?

The duration of clinical trials varies. Some trials last weeks, some years, depending on the phase and intention of the trial.

Do I get compensated for taking part in clinical trials?

Compensation varies per trial. Some offer payment or reimbursement for time and travel, while others may not.

How safe are clinical trials?

Clinical trials follow strict ethical guidelines and protocols to safeguard participants' health. They are closely monitored and safety reviewed regularly.
